Joanna Gaines Inspired Industrial Farmhouse Lamp {February Pinterest Challenge}

Are you surprised to see me today?  I know I'm not normally a workin' on the weekend kind of girl.  At least not in the writing department. Usually I'm in the painting, sawing, nailing department on any given Saturday.

But I'm here today because I have teamed up with several other bloggers for a Pinterest challenge!  If you're like me, you probably pin a gajillion inspirations but never actually make the time to do them.

If you hadn't heard the first 100 times I've said before that I'm a Joanna Gaines fanatic, you know it now.  How on earth does that woman put together the junkiest stuff and make it look like a million bucks?

Months ago I pinned this industrial lamp she has in the upstairs living room of her farmhouse, and I realized I had a lamp I'd bought for Olivia's room over a year ago at a consignment sale.  I made a mental note to recreate it and somehow didn't get around to it.  But I can now check that pin off my list! (Only 50,000 more to go, right?)

This is one of those projects where I keep staring at it trying to decide if I really love it or really hate it.  I should have probably left this one to the pro.  But it's quirky and different, and y'all know I'm all about getting away from cookie cutter.

Here's what I used:

Here's how my lamp looked before.  I'd found the lamp shade at Goodwill for $2 and the lamp base was something like $6.  It was all so white!  Too white.  And had some dingy places.

So I cut up the shade.  Only seems rational, don't ya think?  Hey, it was $2.  What did I have to lose?

Then it looked like I was ready to go TP my neighbor's yard.  I actually liked the galvanized metal look of the shade frame but since the top was gold, I had to do something about it.  I had some leftover black hammered spray paint from our shower in our bathroom makeover, so I used up the rest on the shade frame.

Word of warning: Do not get between a craft-crazed girl and her DIY project.  You will get stabbed with a kitchen knife.  My stubborn paint bottle that didn't want to open didn't stand a chance.

I used some leftover Folk Art Chalk Paint in Parisian Gray from my distressed thrifted frames I did last year for the base.

After two coats of the gray, I dry brushed some Folk Art Chalk Paint in Java.

The dry brushing was nice but it wasn't quite worn enough yet to really mimic Joanna's design.

So I swiped on some clear Minwax Paste Finishing Wax.  I use an old sock for waxing since it's easier for me to work with than a rag.  I just wear the sock like a mitten and buff away.

After the clear wax, I sparingly rubbed on a little Annie Sloan Dark Wax.

Much better.  Weathered, worn, French gray.

Once my shade was dry, I hot glued a roll of burlap ribbon to the top and bottom, inside and outside.

It seemed to soften the industrial look a little.

It's nowhere close to Joanna's version, but I love that it's unique.  I haven't decided yet if I'll get a real shade for it, but I do love how the lamp base burned out.  Considering the whole project took $8 and less than an hour to do, I'm not losing any sleep over it.

What do you think?  Yay or nay?  I'm on the fence with this one.
